Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT)

What is Endovenous laser treatment of varicose veins? Many people do not understand the exact meaning of this procedure.

Endovenous means vascular treatment that occurs inside the affected vessel.

Laser – a device is used that produces a nearly parallel, nearly monochromatic, and coherent beam of light by exciting atoms to a higher energy level and causing them to radiate their energy in phase.

Vein treatment – a procedure aimed at removing varicose veins.

Endovenous laser treatment is a quick and virtually painless alternative to surgery. Due to the new technologies, the laser treatment of veins allows you to receive fast and efficient results. EVLT is classified as an "in-office" procedure where the patient does not require hospitalization. The procedure takes 30 – 45 minutes.

This treatment technique works on even the largest of veins. The patients do not lose mobility. In fact, they can even return to their normal schedules nearly immediately after the procedure. The only limitations include avoiding active exercise and deep thermal procedures for a week.

The EVLT procedure is relatively new and flourishing only in the last decade. Even today, the treatment of varicose veins by laser treatment requires expensive equipment and special tools. Not all clinics have experienced and qualified personnel performing the procedure.

Advantages of endovenous laser therapy:

  1. Virtually pain free – uses local anesthesia, thus avoiding dangers from general anesthesia. For all patients the procedure is quick, easy and virtually painless.
  2. Safety – the impact of the laser is produced in a specific location of the affected venous vessel and under the control of ultrasound scanning.
  3. Cosmetic effect – procedure leaves no scars.
  4. Rapid recovery of patient – the ability to return to normal daily routine almost immediately after the procedure.
  5. Long term treatment results after the procedure – Ultrasound examination in our clinic will be conducted 1, and 6 months after the procedure to dynamically monitor and control the patient.

The only potential inconvenience to the patient after the treatment is the need to wear compression stocking.

How EVLT works:

The treatment is a special intravascular laser with a certain wavelength. The laser hits the target accurately on the affected area without damaging surrounding tissue. This is why EVLT is the most gentle and harmless treatment for varicose veins.

Expert opinion by Dr. Alexander Gorodetsky:

«EVLT is a very effective technique especially when combined with the correct diagnosis and handled in the right hands. But do not forget that to achieve such a result, the procedure must be performed in a specialized clinic equipped with knowledgeable staff that has extensive experience and training. The treating doctor, in addition to the appropriate level of knowledge, must be attentive to you and your health needs.

Taking into account the experience of the physician, I believe that EVLT may be the best choice method for 70 – 80% of patients with varicose disease of the legs. However, based on individual characteristics of the legs, a consultation will benefit the patient to know the absolute best treatment path. The treatment plan is selected based on the results of the initial diagnosis and sometimes patients may even need a combination of several treatment methods. That is an efficient treatment for varicose veins!»
